I was making dinner, emptying the dishwasher,
rushing through it all with my usual sense of urgency.
My toddler walked up to tell me a story.
And I just kept saying "nice"... "that's so cool"...
Not even making eye contact.
Too distracted. Too overstimulated.

When she walked away I was like — wait.

And that wave of guilt hit me.
I missed it. Again.
My heart broke a little.
She could barely string sentences together,
but I knew she could FEEL that I wasn't really there.
Not in the way she needed.
Not in the way I desperately wanted to be.
I wanted to be IN it with her.
Breathing in her every word.
Noticing the shape of her mouth as she spoke.
The sparkle in her eyes as they lit up.
So present there was no second guessing...
just locking it into my brain somewhere I could return to when I'm 80 years old.
